The term “maternal gatekeeping” was first used (according to my own research) by psychologist Barbara L. Allen in the early 1980s. Allen aimed to explore how mothers can both facilitate and hinder fathers’ involvement in raising their children. The term was later further developed in the 1990 and continues to show up in research as recently as 2023.
